Every child is an individual with different interests, skills, strengths and needs. Our goal is to get to know as much as possible about each child in order to guide learning and plan experiences to enhance your child's development. To do this we use an authentic, ongoing observation-based assessment system to gather information on each child. Children's work is collected from work samples, photographs, audio tapes, or video tapes. This information is digitally transferred to Teaching Strategies GOLD®, a valid and reliable assessment tool using research based objectives that align with the Rhode Island Early Learning and Development Standards. Teachers collect data then process the data using the developmental continuum from Teaching Strategies GOLD® three times per year, fall, winter and spring. Information collected demonstrates the child's progress as a learner via Teaching Strategies GOLD® and is shared formally with parents two times a year, fall and spring, by means of parent/teacher conferences and one time informally using the Teaching Strategies GOLD® DEVELOPMENT AND LEARNING Report. Additionally, Sunshine offers Child Outreach screening through the North Kingstown School Department every year in September and each month as necessary. We follow up with families of children that might require re-screening or referral as well as helping families understand screening results and next steps.
